The story of Pokémon White takes place in the Unova region, where the player begins a new Pokémon journey with two childhood friends, Cheren and Bianca. Professor Juniper gives the new Trainers their first Pokémon and asks them to help out with Pokémon research as they start their journey. Players travel between Unova's towns and routes, capturing Pokemon, battling trainers, earning gym badges, and preparing for the Pokemon League. Meanwhile, a mysterious organisation known as Team Plasma begins to spread a message of separating humans and Pokémon. One of the more important characters is N, a Trainer who believes Pokémon should be separated from humans. His ability to talk to Pokémon in a way that no other rival the player faces can do, puts more emphasis on the human-Pokémon relationships in the story. Team Plasma gets more serious with their plans as the adventure continues. N befriends the legendary Pokemon Reshiram, while Ghetsis and the Seven Sages have their own ambitions. The player eventually gets into a conflict with Team Plasma, N, the legendary Pokémon and the future of the Unova region.

Pokémon White employs the familiar turn-based Pokémon battle system with a few new mechanics. Players travel the Unova region, encounter wild Pokémon, catch them, train their own team, and battle other Trainers. All Pokémon have their own types, abilities, stats, moves, and possible evolutions. Players choose moves in battle, and can use type advantages, status conditions, abilities, and strategic switching to defeat their opponents. Triple Battles and Rotation Battles also came with Generation V. Triple Battles feature three Pokémon battling at once, and Rotation Battles let the player switch between three Pokémon during the fight. The game also has seasons that change. Unova’s environment depends on the in-game season, which alters the appearance of some locations and some gameplay opportunities.
